How to Install ABS Plastic Caliper Covers
ABS Plastic Caliper Covers
Preparation & Tools
Whenever you are working on a vehicle it is important that your work area and the vehicle itself be clean and dry. This is especially important when you are using adhesives as the surfaces need to be free of dust and greases or adhesion will not occur.
CAUTION: Because you will need to remove your vehicle's tires to install these caliper covers you should NEVER work on an incline. Before jacking your car up, be sure that you are on a level surface and you have someone spotting you.
Recommend Installation Tools
You will need the following tools and supplies to complete your installation of these plastic caliper covers quickly and without difficulty:
- Sand-paper or a wire brush
- High-heat silicone-based adhesives
- A marker or grease pencil (if trimming is required)
- Razor blade, Dremel tool or bench grinder
Step 1 - Remove Wheel and Rim to Expose Brakes
Remove your vehicles' wheel and rim to expose the brake and caliper. Please note that these can only be installed on disc type brakes.
DO NOT ATTEMPT INSTALLATION ON DRUM BRAKES.
Step 2 - Clean the Calipers and Brakes
Because we will be using adhesives as the fastening agent it is imperative that you thoroughly clean the caliper and brakes.
Step 3 - Test Caliper Cover Fitment
Test caliper cover for fitment. You will decide here if the cover will need to be trimmed. Tape cover to the caliper and place the rim back onto the wheel. DOes it spin freely? If yes, no trimming will be required. If not, you will either need to trim the cover or use wheel spacers.
Step 4 (Optional) - Trim to Fit
If trimming is required, tape the cover to the caliper and mark the excess areas to be trimmed with a pen, marker or Grease pencil. Proceed to trim with a Dremel tool or you can even score with a box-cutter and break away the pieces.
Step 5 - Abrade the Surfaces of the Caliper and Cover
Because we are using glue, we need to make sure the contact surfaces are rough and will give the adhesive a good surface for installation. Use a wire brush or coarse grain sandpaper o rough up the surfaces where you will apply the glue.
Step 6 - Apply Silicone-based Adhesive
Apply high-heat, silicone glue to the caliper and the inner surface of the covers.
Step 7 - Tape in Place and Allow to Cure
Tape the cover in place and allow the adhesives to cure for at least 24 hours.
